How I work

My approach

I draw on a range of evidence-based modalities, shaped around your individual needs and goals. No single approach fits everyone — that's why I tailor each engagement to the person in front of me.

01
Person-centred

You are the expert on your own life. My role is to provide a non-judgmental, empathic space where you feel genuinely heard and respected — always at your pace.

02
Emotionally focused

Drawing on EFT principles, I help clients understand their emotional patterns and create the conditions for lasting, meaningful change.

03
Integrative

I combine person-centred therapy, and mindfulness — selecting what fits best for each unique person, presenting concern, and stage of the therapeutic relationship.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?
No. You can book directly with Andrew Heggie Therapy without a referral from a GP or another health professional.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know you. We'll talk about what brought you to counselling, what you're hoping to get from the process, and a little about your background. There's no pressure to share anything you're not ready to — it's a space to explore at your own pace. I'll also explain how I work and answer any questions you have about the process.
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes — confidentiality is foundational to our work together. Everything you share stays between us. There are three narrow legal exceptions: if I have reason to believe you or someone else is in imminent danger, if a court subpoenas my records, or in certain mandatory reporting situations. I'll always discuss these limits with you in your first session.
Do you offer Medicare rebates or bulk billing?
As a counsellor (not a psychologist or GP), I am not eligible to provide Medicare rebates, and I do not offer bulk billing. However, many private health insurance policies include extras cover for counselling — it's worth checking your policy under "psychology" or "allied health." Concession rates are available — please ask when booking.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies significantly from person to person. Some people feel significant benefit after 6–8 sessions; others prefer longer-term support. We'll discuss this together as we go and adjust our pace to what's right for you. There's no minimum commitment — you're in control.
Do you offer online or telephone sessions?
Yes — I offer secure video sessions via a GDPR and Australian Privacy Act-compliant platform. Telephone sessions are also available. This is often helpful for clients in Mornington, Somerville, Hastings, Langwarrin and across the Mornington Peninsula.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
I ask for at least 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may incur a cancellation fee of 50% of the session cost. I understand that life happens — please just reach out as soon as you can and we'll work something out.
What's the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?
Both provide talk therapy and support mental health and wellbeing. Psychologists have completed a six-year university pathway and are registered with AHPRA, making them eligible to provide Medicare rebates. Counsellors like myself complete a dedicated counselling qualification and are accredited through the ACA. Both are effective — the right fit for you depends on your needs and preferences.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ clients?
Absolutely. I am affirming of all genders, sexualities, relationship structures, and identities. My practice is a safe and welcoming space for everyone. I have experience working with clients navigating issues specific to the LGBTQ+ community, including identity, family, and relationship challenges.
Do you work with teenagers and young people?
Yes. Counselling support is available for children aged 8+ and teenagers, depending on their needs and whether the service is a suitable fit. Parents or caregivers can contact Andrew to discuss the situation first.
