What to Expect in Your First Counselling Session

A gentle guide for anyone thinking about starting counselling and wondering what the first conversation might feel like.

Your first session is a gentle starting point

Starting counselling can feel like a big step, especially if you are not sure what to expect. You might feel nervous, unsure, hopeful, or overwhelmed. All of these feelings are completely normal.

Your first counselling session is not about having everything figured out. It is a gentle starting point where you and your counsellor begin to explore what has brought you to counselling, what support you are looking for, and how counselling may be able to help.

In your first session, you can go at your own pace. You do not need to share everything at once, and you do not need to know exactly where to start. Your counsellor will guide the conversation, explain confidentiality, ask about your wellbeing and goals, and help create a space where you feel heard and supported.

Counselling is a conversation, not a test. You are not expected to have the right words or the right answers. You only need to arrive as you are.
